Mercury-Free, Resin Composite Fillings
Composite fillings are a safe, more aesthetic alternative to mercury amalgam (silver) fillings. These tooth colored fillings are made of a safe mixture of resin and glass. They are used to repair decayed areas and small cracks in teeth, as well as replace older fillings if indicated. There are many advantages to composite fillings, such as:
- Custom matched to blend with your existing tooth color
- Bonds to teeth, which forms a tight seal, helping to strengthen rather than weaken teeth
- Can be used in both front and back teeth
- No constant release of mercury vapor, which has been shown to occur throughout the lifetime of mercury amalgam fillings
- No unnecessary exposure to mercury upon placement or removal
- No release of BPA, a potentially harmful chemical
